Age At Draft: 18.8
BA Grade:50/Extreme
Tools:Fastball: 60. Curveball: 60. Changeup: 50. Control: 40.
Schoenwetter had a dominant start to the 2022 summer showcase circuit when he struck out 17 batters in six scoreless innings at Perfect Game’s WWBA 17U National Championship in July. He carried that dominance into his senior spring, going 6-1, 0.91 with 108 strikeouts in 61.2 innings while playing above-average prep competition in Southern California. Schoenwetter is a powerful, 6-foot-3, 190-pound righthander with present stuff. His explosive fastball sits 93-95 mph and touches 98 out of a fast, athletic delivery. He complements his heater with a power, 76-82 mph curveball that he has good feel to spin and can land in the strike zone or bury for chase swings. He also has a low-80s changeup that he rarely throws, but it shows average potential. Schoenwetter racks up swings and misses when he throws the ball over the plate, but his control is below-average and he struggles with walks and deep counts. He tires after about 50 pitches and starts flying open in his delivery. Schoenwetter’s arm strength and athleticism have teams interested as high as the second round even with his control issues. He is committed to UC Santa Barbara and will be command a sizable bonus.

Track Record: At his best, Schoenwetter looked like one of the best prep pitchers in the 2023 draft class. He showed flashes of dominance in summer showcases and had an excellent senior season. He fell to the fourth round in part because of his bonus demands, but that made him the type of high-risk, high-reward pick the Reds could go after because of their large bonus pool. His $1.897 million bonus was the fourth-highest in the Reds’ class.
Scouting Report: Schoenwetter has a 93-95 mph plus fastball that can touch 98, as well as a plus curveball in the high 70s and low 80s that he shows an advanced ability to command and make bigger or smaller depending on the count. Like many high school pitchers, his changeup has further to go, but it will flash average. Schoenwetter needs to get stronger and more consistent with his delivery, and in high school his stuff would back up later in outings.
The Future: Schoenwetter was yet another Reds pitcher who didn’t get officially on the mound in his draft year. The Reds’ 2023 draft class will be judged by the development of Rhett Lowder and Ty Floyd, but adding Schoenwetter to the mix gives the club another high-ceiling arm to dream on.
