School: Washington
Commit/Drafted: Never Drafted
Age at Draft: 22.0
Clayton has been a three-year starting shortstop for Washington and ranked as the No. 185 prospect as a draft-eligible sophomore in 2023. He received interest but turned down money and opted to return to Washington for his junior season—which hasn’t quite lived up to his excellent 2023 year. Clayton slashed .275/.380/.446 with seven home runs in 49 games, with a career-high 18.3% strikeout rate and career-high 13.1% walk rate. He’s a light-hitting righthanded hitter who projects to hit at the bottom of a lineup and will need to thrive on contact skills, and to do so he’ll need to find the barrel more against quality secondaries. He has a reputation as a solid but unspectacular defender who could either slide to second base full time in pro ball or offer utility infield value.

Clayton is one of a handful of draft prospects on the 2023 Washington roster. He received some draft interest out of high school, but opted to attend school instead where he has really blossomed. During his true freshman season, Clayton was Washington’s everyday shortstop and put together a solid season in which he hit .280 with seven doubles and four home runs. This spring Clayton went on an offensive tear early in the season and homered nine times through his first 35 games, and finished with a .321/.389/.541 slash line with 11 home runs and 21 doubles. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound shortstop uses a toe tap and hits with a strong base. His bat remains fairly horizontal over his back shoulder outside of a slight barrel tip in his load. Clayton’s swing is short and direct to the baseball, but has whippy hand action that allows him to get the barrel moving and generate quality impact. On the dirt, he isn’t particularly athletic and his actions can look a bit clunky at times but he does a nice job moving to his glove side and can throw from multiple arm angles. His arm is average at shortstop and there’s a chance he slides over to second in pro ball. Clayton will likely be selected somewhere on day two as a draft-eligible sophomore.
