Camarillo earned a reputation as a slick-fielding defensive shortstop in high school, then stepped onto campus at Cal State Northridge as a freshman and took the everyday shortstop job immediately. He had a breakout offensive season in 2023 when he ranked second in the Big West with a .371 average before transferring to Texas A&M for the 2024 season. Camarillo slashed .288/.384/.432 with seven home runs, but struck out a career-high 20.1% of the time after the move to the SEC and still looks like a glove-first, light-hitting shortstop. Camarillo has a thin frame at 6-foot-1, 180 pounds and while he could add more strength and fill out a bit, he doesn’t hit the ball particularly hard now and might always have below-average raw power. That puts plenty of pressure on his pure hitting ability, which isn’t anything more than an average tool at the moment. Where Camarillo shines is with the glove. He’s got middle infield actions with reliable hands and smooth glovework and an impressive ability to throw on the run while off-balance with accuracy. He’s a slick defender with an advanced internal clock who knows when to get rid of the ball and his actions and exchange could help a solid-average arm play up. He’s an average runner who went 9-for-10 (90%) on the bases this spring.
