Marlins Latin American scouting director Louie Eljaua likes Izquierdo so much that he signed him twice. The first time was in 1995, after the Marlins drafted the former Cuban defector out of a Miami high school. He signed for $60,000 but poor work habits and immaturity led to his release. Four years and two more releases later, Izquierdo returned to the Marlins for less than $3,000 after scout Keith Snider spotted him pitching in the independent Western League. Despite beginning 2001 in the bullpen at Kane County, Izquierdo wound up 16-3, 2.68 at three stops. He came right at hitters with a 90-92 mph sinker and a plus slider. He needs to do a better job maintaining a consistent arm slot, but his meteoric rise took the organization by surprise. When Gary Knotts went down with a shoulder injury, Izquierdo took his place in the Arizona Fall League. He could contend for a job in the Marlins bullpen but probably will start at Triple-A Calgary.
