After appearing to have little hope of developing into a prospect as recently as 1998, Rolls has found new life with Tampa Bay. Rolls struggled for three years after the Dodgers drafted him in the first round out of high school in 1996. He finally showed promise in the high Class A Florida State League in 1999, posting career highs across the board. Nabbed by Kansas City in the major league Rule 5 draft in December 1999 before being sold to Tampa Bay, Rolls spent most of last season on the disabled list after undergoing right shoulder surgery in late March. As a result, the Devil Rays were able to keep him on the major league roster and thus retain his rights. Rolls is an athletic player with above-average defensive skills at third base. While he showed some promise at the plate in 1999 by rebuilding his swing with his quick wrists, he doesn't have good power and struggles with his consistency because he's overly aggressive at the plate. Neither his career .307 on-base percentage nor his .338 slugging percentage is a good sign. Rolls should continue his development this year at Double-A.
