The 24th pick in the 1994 draft, Buchanan's career was thrown off track a year later by a gruesome compound fracture of his left ankle when he hit the first-base bag running out a ground ball. He was off to a .302-3-12 start at Class A Greensboro in what would have been his first full season. Buchanan's long climb finally reached the majors after he tore up the Pacific Coast League in his third try last season. Buchanan hit 22 home runs in his last year in college and was projected to be a power threat, but he didn't hit more than 17 in a minor league season until 2000. Buchanan is only adequate defensively and struggled to make contact in the majors, but he still has a shot at a reserve outfield job in Minnesota this year.
