Like Tom Shearn, Matranga blossomed after a change in roles during a return to Round Rock last year. He had been inconsistent at shortstop and let his fielding woes affect his offense, batting .232 in two years of full-season ball. Recast as a second baseman, he was much more aggressive defensively. Managers rated him the best defensive second baseman in the Texas League--he made just six errors in 100 games--and he earned all-star recognition as well. Less tense at the plate, he improved his average 70 points and more than doubled his extra-base hit production from 2000. Matranga still strikes out too much and can get overly pull-conscious. He has average speed. He projects more as a utilityman than as a regular second baseman in the major leagues, and has enhanced his chances of getting there after remaking himself.
