Redman made his major league debut last season, spending a month in Pittsburgh at midseason and holding his own in limited appearances. He had two straight solid Arizona Fall League seasons and was named to the all-prospect team in 2000 in a poll of league managers and coaches. Redman has outstanding speed, making him a potential leadoff hitter if he refines his offensive game. His ability to motor gives him outstanding range in center field, where he also shows an accurate arm. While a small guy, Redman has gap power and defenses have to play him honest. He has to become more consistent at playing the little man's game, drawing more walks and hitting the ball on the ground regularly. After making great strides in strike zone judgment two years ago in Double-A, Redman regressed last season and went back to swinging at everything. He needs to learn to read pickoff moves better, which would improve his basestealing success. Though Redman likely will repeat Triple-A this season, the Pirates believe he can become a starting center fielder. The jury is out until he shows more consistency at the plate.
