Like Elliot Johnson, Stokes was signed as a nondrafted free agent by area scout Craig Weissmann. Stokes hasn't progressed nearly as fast as Johnson, having repeated high Class A and missing all of 2004 following Tommy John surgery, and he has yet to reach Triple-A at age 26. But he returned to the mound last year, kept battling and is on the verge of knocking on the door to the big leagues. Stokes' best pitch is a mid-70s curveball, and his 89-92 mph fastball can feature heavy sink when he keeps it down in the zone. When he throws it belt-high, it straightens out. His changeup could use some more depth. Stokes is usually around the strike zone, yet isn't very hittable. A starter for the last five seasons, he projects as more of a middle reliever in the majors.
