School: Alabama
Commit/Drafted: Never Drafted
Age at Draft: 23.1
McCants was a notable prospect coming out of high school in the 2020 draft class but made it to campus at Ole Miss, where he spent the first three years of his college career and struggled with the bat. He transferred to Alabama for the 2024 season and has been much better in the batter’s box, cutting his strikeout rate and slashing .329/.385/.630 with 12 home runs and 11 stolen bases in his first 40 games. McCants is old for the class, but can defend in center field and run well, so his performance could make him an interesting senior sign target.

The older brother of Marlins 2021 third-round pick Jordan McCants, TJ had an excellent freshman season in 2021, hitting .300/.369/.433. While he helped the Rebels win their first-ever national title, his bat backed up this year, clouding his chances of being picked a draft-eligible sophomore. McCants hit .236/.324/.410 this year with more strikeouts (29%) than ideal for a hitter with below-average power. McCants’ best pro position is likely second base. He primarily plays right field for Ole Miss and played some center, but he still takes infield at second before games. He looks relatively promising there, although his below-average arm limits him at either position. He’s an average runner. McCants tailed off in 2022 after a great start, so it may make sense for him to try to improve his draft stock by returning for his junior season. -
A quick-twitch athlete, McCants has exciting potential on both sides of the ball with a lean projectable frame, a whippy bat and solid defensive actions in the middle of the infield. Some evaluators believe McCants is a better fit for second base than shortstop because of a longer exchange, but he should have the glove and footwork necessary for either if he can shorten up his release. At the plate, McCants has a line-drive swing with fluid hands in the box, but he has a tendency to get lengthy at times which can disrupt his timing. He has some ambush power presently, but a 6-foot-3, 180-pound frame that should develop more strength in the future to tap into power that could play more consistently. McCants is committed to Mississippi and will be 19 on draft day.
