Kroon is the son of Marc Kroon, who pitched briefly in the major leagues and had a substantial career as a closer in Japan's professional leagues. Matt Kroon, an Oregon commit, played scholastically at Phoenix-area powerhouse Horizon High, where he primarily spent time on the left side of the infield. His best position is third base where he shows good actions and a strong arm. He's athletic and has good baseball instincts, but not a lot of quickness and is still growing into his 6-foot, 165-pound frame. At the plate, there is still some swing-and-miss to Kroon's approach, but he should grow into more power as he physically matures. He has average speed and runs well once underway.
