Veras put together a great first half in high Class A last year before experiencing difficulties after the all-star break. He was 9-3, 2.53 entering July, yet failed to post a victory in his last 11 starts while his overall ERA climbed two full runs. Veras' fastball will touch as high as 97 mph and has a comfort zone at 93-95. But he has no consistency with his secondary pitches. His breaking ball comes and goes, and he becomes much more hittable when he starts relying primarily on his heater. The Rays believe that once he gains confidence in all of his pitches and learns how to mix them instead of falling back on his fastball every time the going gets tough, he'll start to make significant progress. Tampa Bay plans for him to spend this year in Double-A.
