Marrero grew up in Puerto Rico and has many of the classic actions typically found in Latin shortstops, and some scouts call him the best defensive shortstop in this year's college class. He committed just six errors this season, equating to a .977 fielding average, considered excellent for a college shortstop. Marrero has quick hands and feet, smooth actions and plenty of arm strength, and makes both the difficult and routine plays. In particular, he executes throws on the run with aplomb. His speed is considered average. Marrero's bat is a little light, but he put balls in play with increasing frequency and drove them more consistently this year, especially from the right side, and finished his junior year with a .329 average, four homers and 58 RBIs.
