The Angels bolstered their stable of promising young arms through a minor league deal with the White Sox in December. Lefthanders Mozingo and Jim Sweeney came to Anaheim for outfielder Scott Bikowski and infielder Josh Shaffer (Chicago senior scouting director Duane Shaffer's son). Drafted in the third round in 1998 based on his live arm, Mozingo looked like a bust with a career 7.02 ERA heading into 2001. He turned himself around after a trip to major league spring training showed him how much he had to learn. After rededicated himself to his career, he opened the season as a long man in low Class A and ended it as a starter in high Class A. Mozingo throws an 88-92 mph fastball, an average changeup and an improving curveball. He still has work to do on his conditioning as he ran out of gas at the end of last season. He'll likely debut for the Angels in high Class A, and he can earn a 40-man roster spot with a strong season.
