A four-year starter for the Mustangs, Allen opted not to sign with the Red Sox as a 23rd-round pick last year and posted a solid senior campaign this spring, hitting .301/.345/.457 with a career-high five homers and 37 RBIs. But his stock has dropped a bit, in part because he put on some weight and has shown less arm strength and speed than he did a year ago, when both tools rated as 55s. Now his arm grades out as average, and his speed is fringy. Still, he's a good athlete with sound infield actions, and he figures to make a seamless transition to second base in pro ball, with enough versatility to fill in all over the diamond. Allen is an aggressive hitter with a pull-to-middle approach, and he has never walked much, posting a 12-39 BB-SO mark this spring. But he has bat speed and sneaky pop to the pull side, as well as a knack for barreling up line drives.

After hitting .345/.372/.507 as a sophomore in 2012, Allen slumped to .272/.311/.352 with one homer and a 40-5 strikeout-walk mark this year. Some scouts still believe in his hitting ability, however, because he has a short righthanded swing with bat speed and a pull-to-middle approach. His bat doesn't stay in the zone long enough for him to excel at going the other way, and some scouts see him as a fringy to average hitter with below-average power, at best. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Allen lacks the pop to profile at the hot corner, though he plays the position well, so he figures to move to second base as a pro. He has the athleticism and actions to be a good defender there. His slightly above-average arm is also an asset, and he is a slightly above-average runner. Some scouts think Allen will be better as a senior sign next year, but others like him in the 7-10-round range.
