Espino signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2016 for $300,000, which was the Mets' largest outlay that year on the international market. A growth spurt during his signing year saw the 16-year-old Espino grow two inches to 6-foot-2, and his wide shoulders suggest he can further develop his 176-pound frame. With enhanced strength came enhanced power, and his loose, easy swing gradually became more dangerous. In his pro debut in 2017, Espino led the Dominican Summer League with 27 extra-base hits, and he smacked three more in four games following a late promotion to the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League. His physical gains and early pro success have boosted his confidence in the batter's box. A smooth, instinctual athlete, Espino shows pure shortstop actions but lacks explosive range. He makes routine plays--and the occasional highlight play--with an above-average arm and strong internal clock. The Mets expect Espino to highlight their GCL affiliate in 2018, and he has a chance to rocket up this ranking in the seasons to come based on his offensive upside as a shortstop.
