BA Grade/Risk: 45/High
Track Record: Perez is the son of former Blue Jays outfielder Robert Perez Sr. but wasn't a top prospect as an amateur despite his big league pedigree. The Mariners signed Perez for $75,000 during the 2016 signing period and kept him in short-season ball for almost three years, where he largely failed to distinguish himself. Perez returned from the coronavirus shutdown vastly improved and showed some of the best power in the Low-A California League in 2021. He took another step forward in 2022, leading the Mariners systems in home runs (27), RBIs (114), runs scored (100) and total bases (254) as he rose to High-A Everett and won the Mariners minor league hitter of the year award.
Scouting Report: Perez is a strong, physical masher with tremendous strength from the right side. He has plus-plus raw power and gets to it in games, hitting gargantuan home runs to his pull side and posting exit velocities on par with top major league sluggers. Perez destroys balls when he makes contact, but he is a dead-pull hitter who pulls off the ball and doesn't cover the outer half of the plate. He struggles with top-end velocity and projects to be a below-average hitter who has to feast on mistakes. Perez is a threat offensively but an enormous liability defensively. He is limited to first base and struggles to field routine grounders or make easy scoops with his hard hands and limited athleticism.
The Future: Perez's power gives him a chance to emerge in the majors despite his shortcomings, likely as a DH. He'll open at Double-A Arkansas in 2023.
Scouting Grades: Hit: 30. Power: 60. Speed: 30. Fielding: 30. Arm: 40.
