The Nationals jumped Suero from the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League to low Class A Hagerstown to start 2014, and he responded with a strong April to earn a promotion to high Class A Potomac. The Carolina League proved too much for him, so he returned to Hagerstown at the end of June and finished strong, moving from the bullpen to the rotation in August. The Nationals say Suero sometimes works in the 90-93 mph range with his fastball, but some scouts have seen him work exclusively in the high 80s, prompting them to question his upside. His fastball has natural, late cutting action, and he flashes an above-average curveball that he can throw for strikes or bury. More often, the pitch is below-average, and his changeup remains a below-average work in progress. Suero is a good strike-thrower who walked just 1.4 batters per nine innings at Hagerstown, and his feel for pitching gives him a shot at higher levels. Opinion is very mixed about his big league chances, and he profiles best as a reliever. He'll get another shot at Potomac in 2015, and the Nationals could push him to Double-A Harrisburg if he handles the Carolina League better this time around.
