Drafted in the 7th round (219th overall) by the Baltimore Orioles in 2013 (signed for $218,500).
View Draft Report
One of the Cape Cod League's breakout stars last summer, Dosch batted .326 with 21 extra-base hits in 44 games. He has had a solid if less spectacular junior season, though he has maintained his status as one of the best pure hitters in the college class. The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder has a smooth lefthanded swing and a mature approach, focusing on hitting line drives from gap to gap. Scouts aren't sure how much power he'll have in pro ball, with some saying he'll top out at 10-12 homers a year and others saying he'll have average pop if he turns on and lofts more pitches. Dosch has average speed and solid arm strength, but he may have to move off third base in pro ball because he lacks agility and struggles to throw from different angles. A shift to left field or first base will make it even more important that he produce more power.

The Orioles drafted Dosch in 2013 just weeks after he had surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee, convinced he would make a full recovery. Baltimore general manager Dan Duquette saw Dosch play as an all-star in the Cape Cod League in the summer of 2012, so the organization was pleased to draft him in the seventh round the following year. Dosch finished seventh in the South Atlantic League in batting (.314) in 2014, headlined by a July in which he hit .364 in 107 at-bats. The Orioles feel that his mature approach is as good as any in their system. He uses the whole field, lets the ball travel deep in the hitting zone, and has above-average plate-discipline skills. The lefthanded hitter has shown the ability to make adjustments well. One scout compared his smooth, compact swing to Wade Boggs. Dosch has below-average speed, and scouts debate whether he will develop more than below-average power. His defense at third also is a question. He has arm strength, and his hands are decent, but his agility and consistency need to improve. Dosch will begin 2015 as the third baseman at high Class A Frederick.
