Nuss entered his senior year as the No. 79 high school prospect in the country at Mount Dora (Fla.) HS and was a 32nd-round pick by the Yankees in 2010. He followed that with a strong summer in the Florida Collegiate League, being named the No. 1 prospect there. He began his college career at Central Florida and was part of the 2012 regional team's deep bullpen, posting a 3.89 ERA in 44 innings. Then he transferred to Seminole (Fla.) State JC, and while his fastball has bumped 94, he usually still pitches with an 89-91 mph fastball and average, inconsistent breaking ball.
