Organization Prospect Rankings
Martinez made as much progress as any player in the organization last year. Drafted out of Puerto Rico in 2001, he blossomed offensively in high Class A. He owns one of the purest swings in the organization, a smooth lefthanded stroke capable of raking doubles from gap to gap. Martinez even hits southpaws well, batting .301 against them in 2004. He has gained 25 pounds since signing, but his athletic frame is still maturing. As he gets stronger and improves his plate discipline, Rays officials expect some of his doubles to become home runs. They project him to develop at least average power, capable of hitting 20 or more homers per season. Martinez started games at first, second and third base in 2004, as well as at all three outfield spots. He may get more time in Double-A this year at the hot corner, where he has good hands and enough arm. He'll need to upgrade his footwork. In any case, Martinez' bat will be his calling card.
