Organization Prospect Rankings
Despite spending just two years at Division II West Florida, Lawley ranks inside the program's top 10 in career home runs (sixth), doubles (eighth) and RBIs (ninth). A 19th-round pick in 2011, he put himself on the map with a loud 2013 season, leading the high Class A Florida State League with 25 homers and a .512 slugging percentage to win the circuit's MVP award. He led the organization in 26 home runs and 96 RBIs. Lawley takes a big swing and can crush mistakes a long way to his pull side, generating well-above-average carry and loft when he barrels the ball. Some scouts give him little chance to hit for average based on his trouble reading breaking-ball spin and foibles versus righthanders (.244/.301/.474 with 24 percent strikeouts in 2013). He's a fringe runner with tick-below-average range and solid arm strength suitable for either left or right field. He's athletic enough to have spotted at third base 17 times in 2013. With 60-grade power, Lawley has a carrying tool to be at least a part-time corner bat. Now he must prove he can hit, a test he'll take at Double-A in 2014.
