The Pirates acquired Garrett and reliever Shawn Camp from San Diego in a July 2001 trade for outfielder Emil Brown, whom they had designated for assignment. While the deal didn't generate much publicity, it could turn out to be a steal for Pittsburgh. Garrett turned in a fine season and played in the Double-A all-star game in 2002. He has an outstanding work ethic and is always one of the first players to the park each day. He's a good competitor and enjoys hitting in RBI situations. Garrett has a consistent stroke from both sides of the plate, though he flashes more power lefthanded. He can play all three outfield spots but is only an adequate defender with a slightly below-average arm. He needs to show more power to play every day in the outfield in the majors. Though Garrett steals some bases, he possesses only average speed. He opened eyes last season and will get the chance to prove himself again this year in Triple-A. He could win a bench job in Pittsburgh in 2004.
