Honing his splitter made all the difference for DeBarr. He started 2003 in the low Class A bullpen, and he initially tried to be too fine his pitches. Once he got more aggressive and gained the splitter as an effective second pitch, he moved to the rotation and emerged as Charleston's ace after Scott Autrey was promoted. DeBarr's fastball sits in the low 90s, and his strong frame suggests that there could be more velocity to come. His slider is average at best, which is why the splitter was so important for him. It looks exactly like his fastball until it drops off at the plate. The Rays worked incessantly with DeBarr last year to speed up his delivery. He was a tortoise-like 1.85 seconds to home plate, and basestealers succeded in 28 of 34 (83 percent) against him. He has developed a slide-step that shows some promise. DeBarr will pitch in high Class A in 2004.
