Perez has been a starting shortstop in each of his six pro seasons. While his glove has been up to the task, his bat has lagged behind. He hit an uncharacteristic .312/.405/.404 during the first half of the 2011 season at Double-A Arkansas, when he batted second in the order behind Minor League Player of the Year Mike Trout. After Trout's promotion, Perez hit just .199/.325/.262. He did manage to walk 68 times on the year, and the switch-hitter shows strong bat speed from both sides of the plate. Yet he rarely hits the ball with any authority and has yet to convince scouts that big league pitchers won't just overmatch him. Perez receives average grades for his range at shortstop, his running speed and his throwing arm, though he doesn't have the arm strength to make plays from deep in the hole. His hands are soft, but he could stand to charge the ball more aggressively. The Angels want Perez to improve his maturity level and not let bad plays or batting slumps fester. He has a chance to become a major league utility player if his bat takes a step forward. Because he offers a similar tool set to projected Triple-A shortstop Andrew Romine, Perez may begin 2012 back in Double-A.
