A former shortstop at the University of Virginia who moved to the mound toward the end of his college career, Lavigne has made rapid progress during his first two full seasons as a pro. At 5-foot-11, he doesn't have the size scouts want in a righthander, and his overall stuff is far from overpowering. But he gets outs by spotting four pitches all around the strike zone. Lavigne ties up hitters with a changeup that's nearly a plus pitch. He also has an average fastball, a curveball and a slider. The Mets like the way Lavigne challenges hitters and never strays from his determined approach. He gets results, and his bulldog mentality could make him an effective set-up man in the majors if he can walk the fine line between throwing strikes and not giving batters too good a pitch to hit. His performance in spring training will determine whether Lavigne opens 2003 in Double-A or Triple-A.
