Though the Red Sox spent the offseason looking to upgrade at third base and had Jimenez coming off a solid season in Double-A, they chose not to protect him on their 40-man roster. That left him available in the major league Rule 5 draft, where the Astros selected him and shipped him to Florida as the third prospect in a package for Matt Lindstrom. Jimenez controls the strike zone and hits for average with gap power. He has a cannon for an arm, but scouts are split on whether he'll be able to play third base at the big league level. A below-average runner, he doesn't cover much ground at third and his hands aren't the softest. The Marlins think he can handle the hot corner, and he might be a low-cost option for the big league club in 2010. If he can't stick on the 25-man roster, he'd have to clear waivers and be offered back to Boston for half the $50,000 draft price before Florida could send him to the minors.
