A draft-and-follow out of Gloucester County (N.J.) Junior College, Flannery has developed steadily as he has grown stronger. His fastball now touches 96 mph, and he complements it with a slider that has shown flashes of being a plus pitch. More often, though, the slider is just average, causing Flannery to rely even more on his fastball command and a bulldog mentality. Like Kevin Cave a level below, Flannery has worked his way up from a modest draft position to prospect status. Flannery showed the ability to close for a Carolina team that won the Southern League crown, but he probably projects as more of a set-up man. He was slated to represent the Marlins in the Arizona Fall League before a tired arm caused the organization to rethink the decision. Added to the 40-man roster for the first time, Flannery figures to start the year in Triple-A. He could see his first big league action at some point in 2004.
