Buttler signed with the University of Arkansas out of high school but went to El Camino JC after breaking a hamate bone as a freshman. He repeated low Class A last season, his third year in pro ball, and performed solidly. Buttler is a great athlete who is beginning to translate his raw tools into baseball skills. He's outstanding defensively with tremendous range in center field, particularly coming in on balls. He didn't commit an error last season until August. He also has plus speed and is learning how to use it on the bases. Though he made strides as a hitter last year, Buttler can be a little overeager at times and get himself out on pitcher's pitches. While he puts the ball in play consistently and has power potential, he'll need to walk more to keep hitting at the top of the order. Buttler showed improvement last season and the Pirates are anxious to see how he handles high Class A this year.
