After being named the Rays' minor league pitcher of the year and leading the system in wins and ERA in 2000, Magrane made a successful jump from low Class A to Double-A last season. He topped Orlando in wins, ERA, starts, innings and strikeouts. Signed as a nondrafted free agent, the nephew of former major league pitcher and Rays television broadcaster Joe Magrane succeeds by throwing strikes and moving his pitches around in the strike zone. None of his pitches is overpowering, but Magrane knows how to mix his offerings effectively to keep hitters off balance. He throws two- and four-seam fastballs at 87-89 mph, a changeup, a slider and a curveball. He also possesses outstanding poise and impressive maturity both on the field and off. A classic overachiever, Magrane will continue his ascent in Triple-A this year.
