A draft-eligible sophomore in 2000, Brewer sent a letter to major league teams to explain he was intent on returning to Baylor for a third season. The Devil Rays changed his mind after taking him in the fifth round, signing him to a $1.5 million major league contract. Brewer underwent surgery after the 2000 season to repair a small tear in his throwing shoulder and continued to battle soreness in his rotator cuff last year. He injured his thumb early in the season, missing most of May and not getting untracked offensively until August. Brewer rebounded to hit .298 with gap power in the final month, concluding 2001 on a positive note. He has natural athleticism that results in fluid actions with above-average range at shortstop. He also has a plus arm when healthy, and possesses above-average speed and baserunning ability. Brewer is a line-drive hitter who needs to add strength in order to drive the ball more consistently. His plate discipline showed some improvement last year but still needs work. The Rays believe Brewer could develop quickly provided he remains on the field. He's expected to start 2002 in high Class A.
A draft-eligible sophomore last spring, Brewer wrote letters to all teams saying he wanted to spend another year in college to improve his game. The Devil Rays loved his natural defensive ability and took him in the fifth round, then persuaded him to sign a major league contract worth $1.5 million. After a contract-mandated promotion to Tampa Bay in September, Brewer was shut down with a small tear in his throwing shoulder. Brewer is a fluid shortstop with a plus arm, and he also has above-average speed and baserunning ability. At the plate, Brewer is a line-drive hitter who realizes his power limitations with wood. But with the days of weak-hitting shortstops gone, Brewer will need to add some strength in order to drive the ball more consistently. He also must improve his knowledge of the strike zone. Brewer may require shoulder surgery, leaving his status uncertain. Should he be ready to play at the start of 2001, he likely will head to Class A Bakersfield.
