View Draft Report
Watkins began his career as an outfielder/reliever at Loyola Marymount and was a second team Freshman All-American as a two-way player in 2015. Brendan McKay was the First Team two-way player. Watkins continued playing two ways as a sophomore but moved predominantly to the outfield after transferring to Cal State Los Angeles as a junior and became one of the most prolific hitters in Div. II. Watkins is smaller at 5-foot-10, 180 pounds but possesses "lightning" bat speed in the words of one evaluator and can hit it out to all fields. The arm and athleticism that made him an excellent young pitcher have translated well to right field and make him a solid defender with a plus arm there. Watkins projects for average power with a plus arm in right field but he is seen as a below-average hitter when faced with good pitching, limiting his overall upside.
