Diaz stood out at the World Wood Bat Championships in Jupiter, Fla., last fall when he played with the Texas Sun Devils. Diaz's father (of the same name) was a second-round pick of the Rangers in 1993 and spent 13 years in professional baseball, including cups of coffee with the Diamondbacks in 1998 and '99. Diaz attends the same high school as his father, and the school also produced the Molina brothers. He has a lean, wiry build at 6-foot-2 and 175 pounds. He's a righthanded hitter with bat speed and a gap-to-gap approach, but he stands out for his defense, showing soft hands and smooth actions. Scouts don't believe he has the range or arm strength to play shortstop, however. Diaz's smarts on the diamond and polish help his tools play up.
