Drafted in the 3rd round (93rd overall) by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2013 (signed for $510,000).
View Draft Report
An Ohio native, Mayers is still growing into his 6-foot-3, 205-pound body and had an inconsistent junior season. He tired late in 2012, particularly in the Cape Cod League, but was gaining strength and moving up draft boards as 2013 wore on. He tossed seven scoreless innings against rival Mississippi State, and at his best he works with three solid-average pitches. His fastball sits in the 89-93 mph range, and he has pitched downhill more effectively this spring. His fastball lacks life, so he'll need to hone his command. He has improved his strike-throwing ability with his fastball and slider, a solid-average pitch and his best secondary offering. He lacks consistency with his changeup. Some scouts see him as nothing more than a fifth starter, while others cite his athleticism and think Mayers has more to offer.

Organization Prospect Rankings
An Ohio prep product, Mayers spent two years in the Mississippi rotation, then signed for $510,000 as a Cardinals third-rounder in 2013. He jumped through three levels in his first full season, finishing at Triple-A. In the Texas League, he turned in 10 quality starts out of 13 tries, working with Yadier Molina in his final Double-A start when Molina was down on an injury rehab assignment. Mayers' above-average fastball has some giddyup, topping at 97 mph, and he mixes in a sinker and slurvy slider. He didn't give up many home runs, even though he frequently missed up with his fastball. Tightening his slider, which plays fringe-average, would help improve his modest strikeout rate. Mayers learned to manage himself as a pro, showing maturity when it came to minimizing damage. He could open 2015 back at Memphis.
