  Perez entered 2000 with a 5.25 ERA to show for 120 innings in Rookie ball, and ended the year as a member of the 40-man roster despite never having played in a full-season league. His meteoric rise came as his long, lean, projectable body started producing, with dominating results in the New York-Penn League. Opponents batted just .181 against him. Perez' performance in the Dominican League in the offseason further raised his profile, prompting his protection on the roster. Perez' greatest improvement came in commanding his above-average fastball. He hasn't settled on a consistent second pitch, fiddling with both a slider and a splitter.
