Minor League Top Prospects
Perhaps the most highly touted major league prospect of 1981. A second-round draft pick of Baltimore in 1978 out of Aberdeen (Md.) High, Ripken has progressed quickly through the Orioles' system. Named high Class A Florida State League’s all-star third sacker in 1980 on the heels of .276-25-78 year. Son of Baltimore third base coach Cal Ripken Sr. Hit .288 with 23 home runs and 75 RBIs at Triple-A Rochester in 1981 and was named International League’s all-star third baseman. Struggled some with Orioles when called up, when they tried him at shortstop. Shouldn’t be a problem. “Everywhere he has played he has started slowly, so that was expected,” said a scout. “This year, he’ll be ready.” Has made a big impression with his ability to handle inside fastball. Great instinct and hands in the field.
