A third-round selection out of Clemson in June 1982, Key has come in a hurry. He has already touched each level in the minor leagues, finishing up last year (his first full season in pro ball) at the Triple-A level after starting the year at Double-A Knoxville. Key has great poise and makeup. As well as having a good assortment of pitches, he has the knowledge of how to use them to set up hitters. For a young lefthander, he has shown pretty good control. In 279 minor league innings, he has walked only 101 batters and has struck out 202. He also has allowed just 259 hits.
