View Draft Report
Covey showed one of the best arsenals in the 2010 high school draft class, and the Brewers made him the No. 14 overall pick. But he discovered that summer than he has diabetes, so he decided to attend USD in order to stay closer to home and learn how to manage his condition. His collegiate career has been rocky, as he posted a 7.60 ERA in just 34 innings as a freshman, was better as a sophomore (6-3, 3.32) but took a step backward as a junior this spring (4-4, 5.46 with 58 strikeouts and 36 walks in 61 innings). He still works at 90-93 mph and occasionally touches 94-95, but scouts say he doesn't trust his stuff and too often overthrows, especially with runners on base. Covey is much better out of the windup, as he has had a tendency to rush his delivery in the stretch, though he made a mechanical adjustment prior to his last regular-season start against Portland that helped. His slider has good tilt and can be an out pitch against righties, and he favors his short curveball against lefties. He has shown an average changeup with good arm speed and fade, but it remains a work in progress. Covey has a physical 6-foot-2, 200-pound frame, with no glaring flaws in his delivery, so the source of his command issues seems to be mental. A team will gamble on his size, stuff and pedigree and could be rewarded with a future middle-of-the-rotation starter. He figures to go off the board between the third and fifth rounds.

Covey was drafted 14th overall by the Brewers in 2010, but after a late Type I diabetes diagnosis, he decided to go to college at San Diego so he could better deal with his health. The Athletics drafted him in 2013 in the fourth round, then lost him to the White Sox in the 2016 Rule 5 draft. Covey was off to a solid start to his career before he tore his left oblique at Double-A Midland in May 2016, in the first inning of his sixth start, and missed the remainder of the season. He resumed pitching in the Arizona Fall League, where he recorded a 4.74 ERA and struck out 17 and walked eight in 25 innings. Covey can touch 95 mph with his fastball, but his delivery is not smooth and causes his command to waver. His front knee is stiff and his delivery is difficult to repeat. Covey will make changes to his delivery but then regresses to his previous, comfortable mechanics. With poor command and an inconsistent delivery, Covey relies on keeping the ball low in the zone and is an extreme groundball pitcher. He will have realistic chance with the White Sox to make the pitching staff in 2016, possibly as a No. 5 starter but more likely in a low-leverage relief role. -
Coming off an erratic 2014, Covey turned a corner in 2015, serving as a leader on high Class A Stockton's pitching staff and having his best year since before he was a first-round pick of the Brewers out of high school in 2010. Getting diagnosed with Type I diabetes swayed him not to sign with Milwaukee and go instead to San Diego, with the A's taking him in the fourth round after three up-and-down seasons as a Torero. Covey still has a power arm that can reach 94-95 mph, but he's become a groundball machine thanks to a heavy, sinking 91-93 mph two-seamer, finishing fifth in the full-season minors with a 2.42 groundout/airout ratio last season. His biting curveball can be a plus pitch when he's locating it, and he also throws a changeup that's useful against lefty hitters and the occasional slider. Covey's embraced a pitch-to-contact approach, but his strikeout rate remains low for a pitcher with his stuff. His 6.41 K/9 rate in 2015 was at least an improvement over the year before. The A's still want to see him be more pitch-efficient and work fewer deep counts, something he'll try to tackle as he goes to Double-A Midland in 2016. -
Covey was the 14th overall pick by the Brewers in the 2010 draft out of high school, but he decided against signing after being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in an August physical. He went to the Athletics in the fourth round three years later, signing for $370,000. Splitting his 2014 season at two Class A levels, Covey struggled to find consistency. He would look unhittable at times and be incapable of getting an out at others, even within the same appearance. Covey broke out a much-improved sinking two-seamer at 88-92 mph. His four-seamer gets up to 93 mph with occasional cutting action. He can spin a plus downer curveball that's his best secondary pitch. He also features a serviceable changeup and a seldom-used slider. Covey has a starter's repertoire and a starter's frame, but he needs plenty of development. He does have some feel for pitching but his command can get erratic, and he needs to show better mound presence to limit the big innings that have been his undoing. He'll return to high Class A Stockton to open 2015. -
The Brewers drafted Covey with the 14th pick in the 2010 draft but failed to sign him when he decided to attend San Diego after an August physical revealed he had Type 1 Diabetes. He had an inconsistent three-year run with the Toreros, posting a 5.05 ERA as a junior before landing with the Athletics in the 2013 draft and signing for $370,000. The A's believe they got a first-round caliber arm in the fourth round. Covey throws four quality pitches, led by a 90-95 mph fastball he throws with nice downhill angle. He has a power curveball with hard top-to-bottom break, and he can use it either as a put-away pitch or take a little off if he needs to get one over. His low- to mid-80s slider can be another strikeout pitch, and his changeup shows promise with the arm speed and fading action he generates. Covey throws with a smooth, easy motion and pounds the strike zone, though he does need to throw more quality strikes. Scouts felt he didn't always trust his stuff in college, but he pitched with more confidence against wood bats. Covey didn't execute as consistently with low Class A Beloit after signing and could head back there in 2014. The A's believe they got a big league starter and one of the 2013 draft's steals.
