Drafted in the 9th round (269th overall) by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2013 (signed for $145,000).
View Draft Report
Kuhl ranked ahead of teammate Jimmy Yezzo on BA's Valley League prospect list last summer, but he may not go as high in the draft. He is listed at 6-foot-3, 215 pounds and has a modest arsenal. He pitches with a sinking fastball that may be a tick above-average and fringy slider and changeup. He is well put together and has more athleticism than his frame suggests. He's a ground ball pitcher, striking out just 76 batters in 106 innings this season, and may benefit from professional defense. The starting middle infielders for Delaware combined for 33 errors this season.

The Delaware state player of the year at Middletown High in 2010, Kuhl wasn't drafted and went on to star at the University of Delaware. He doesn't have the type of stuff that makes scouts drool, but he has a good sinking fastball in the low 90s that he locates to both sides of the plate, and he has good command of an otherwise ordinary slider and changeup. Kuhl threw a curveball in college, but the Pirates had him ditch it when he became a pro and swap in a slider. He also helps his cause by consistently repeating his delivery, fielding his position (he led Eastern League pitchers in total chances) and holding runners well. Kuhl is lauded for his competitiveness and mound presence, and while he profiles as a back-end starter, he has experienced nothing but success as a pro by recording a 2.84 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 67 starts. While he has performed, his lack of a plus pitch profiles him best as a groundball-inducing middle reliever, rather than as a rotation option. He will begin the 2016 season at Triple-A Indianapolis and could finish it in Pittsburgh.
The high school player of the year in Delaware in 2010, Kuhl stayed home to play college ball at the University of Delaware. The youngest of five children and a history major, Kuhl is bright and absorbs instruction quickly, helping him make big strides since coming into pro ball. While his fastball usually sits at 89-91 mph, he generates good action on the pitch, and that enables him to induce a high percentage of groundballs. The sinker will need to continue to be a dominant pitch as he moves up the ladder, because his curveball and changeup project to be average at best. While he doesn't light up radar guns, Kuhl has gotten results so far in his young career, including winning 13 games at high Class A Bradenton in 2014. In addition to his intelligence, he also is noted for being an outstanding competitor. While those traits usually aren't as important having great stuff, they do give Kuhl a chance to be a decent major league starter. He will get a chance to prove himself a higher level at Double-A Altoona in 2015.
