Drafted in the 3rd round (103rd overall) by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2012 (signed for $462,900).
View Draft Report
Sandfort had some late draft helium as he pitched well down the stretch, including a late-April win against Oviedo High in the district championship. He struck out 10 in that game and touched 94 mph, and he was starting to grow into his 6-foot-5, 220-pound body. The Florida signee generally sits more in the 88-91 mph range and doesn't always hold his velocity. When he throws his curveball with power in the 75 mph range, it's an effective pitch, and he has some feel for an intriguing changeup.

Sandfort boosted his draft stock with a strong senior year Winter Springs High in 2012, then signed with the Pirates as a third-rounder for the recommended slot bonus of $462,900 rather than play collegiately at Florida. The long and lanky Sandfort is the type of pitcher scouts dream on because of his projectable body. His fastball usually sits in the 88-91 mph range and reaches as high as 94, but the Pirates believe he will throw harder as he adds muscle. He also has a very good curveball that he can throw consistently for strikes. His changeup, though, is still in the rudimentary stages. Sandfort has yet to make it out of the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League in his first two pro seasons, and his performance has been poor. The Pirates, however, knew Sandfort was raw and would require time to move through the system. He has the upside of a No. 2 starter or power reliever, though he's lined up for extended spring training followed by an assignment to short-season Jamestown in 2014.
