Briceno has been a frustrating prospect for the Tigers. Since signing out of Venezuela in 2009, he has teased Detroit with a projectable frame and a big fastball, but he never as posted the results to match. The frustration continued in 2014, when Briceno made three starts at high Class A Lakeland in April before Tommy John surgery ended his season. When healthy, he has a quick arm and a fastball that sits 92-94 mph and can hit 97. He matches it with a changeup that's average, though inconsistent, and a slider that has its moments but remains below-average. Briceno is a solid strike-thrower, though it's more control than command. In addition to a spotty health track record, he also struggles to strike out batters because he doesn't have a reliable out pitch. That allows hitters to sit on his fastball and square him up for hard contact more regularly. Briceno rehabbed through the offseason and is expected to return to game action early in the 2015 season.
The Tigers are one of just four teams with a Venezuelan academy, and consequently they are one of the more active teams in the nation. They signed Briceno there in March 2009 and kept him in the Venezuelan Summer League for two years before bringing him to the United States in 2011. He has pitched exclusively as a starter the past two years and has the stuff to remain in that role. He works with a 92-93 mph fastball that features above-average sink, touches 95 regularly and sometimes reaches 97. He also has an average changeup and shows flashes of an average slider. He has below-average command right now, but it has the potential to be average. If Briceno's slender build can't handle a rotation workload, he also would be an asset in a big league bullpen. His frame and stuff remind some club officials of Ramiro Mendoza. Briceno hasn't posted a sub-5.00 ERA since his 2009 pro debut but he'll probably get his first full-season assignment this year.
