View Draft Report
January graduated from his Massachusetts high school early to begin his collegiate career, but he opted to attend San Jacinto (Texas) CC instead of Louisiana State, where he had originally signed. January showed the lefthanded power that was expected and plenty of bat speed. January has a chance to be an average hitter with above-average power. Where he'll end up playing is more of a question. January has worked at catcher and right field but he ended up predominantly at DH for San Jac. He has the tools to catch with above-average arm strength, but he needs refinement and a team may opt to move him to the outfield full-time to let him focus on his power potential.

January had himself re-classified for the 2015 draft a year early so that he could get a jump start on his college career at Louisiana State. Instead he enrolled at San Jacinto (Texas) JC after going undrafted. A broken thumb at San Jac kept him from getting behind the plate in the latter part of the 2016 season, but he was one of the top performers for the Gators' run to second place in the Junior College World Series. January hit 10 home runs in junior college and then 10 more in his pro debut at Rookie-level Missoula after signing with Arizona for an over-slot $350,000. He caught in 38 of the Osprey's 75 games. January owns a live bat from the left side with plus raw power and loft in his swing, though it can get loopy at times. He's still relatively raw behind the plate, but is athletic and shows average or slightly above-average arm strength. There's still a lot of rawness to his game and he may need another year of short-season ball, but the tools and makeup are there.

January showed intriguing tools as an underclassman, and scouts had begun to circle his name as an intriguing lefthanded bat for 2016. Then, January reclassified as a 2015 graduate, making himself eligible for this year's draft. January has potential at the plate, with very quick hands and a bat that stays in the zone for quite a while. January's next step as a hitter will be incorporating the power in his lower half, as he tends to finish upright without much lower half involvement. January has wide hips and has a long way to go defensively, but he does have an above-average arm. Scouts project him to be a power-hitting right fielder, though there is some chance that he could remain behind the plate at the next level. Despite his reclassification, January is age-appropriate for the class, having turned 18 in late May. Scouts like him, but aren't quite sure if he's signable as a projectable talent that's committed to LSU.
