Drafted in the 38th round (1,140th overall) by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2016.

A former starter at Cornell, McAfee pitched as a graduate student at Duke this spring after a medical redshirt afforded him another year of eligibility. Mostly a Sunday starter, the 6-foot-3, 210-pound righthander went 7-5, 4.11 with 65 strikeouts to 13 walks in 92 innings. McAfee boasts a four-pitch mix, locating his 88-90 mph fastball with above-average command from a three-quarters slot that generates late sink. He gets swing and misses on his curveball, but his slider is more of a show-me pitch and his changeup still needs work. Nothing in McAfee's arsenal is plus, but with his command and feel, he could be a fine organizational soldier with the makeup to become more.

McAfee has been one of the more polished arms in the Ivy League since he first took the mound as a freshman in 2012. The righthander was more of a mid-80s pitcher with late movement for his first two years, and then a back injury sidelined him for most of his junior year. When he returned to the mound this fall, McAfee showed his best velocity, working in the upper 80s. He can now touch 91 mph, and he has exceptional command of an intriguing four-pitch mix. The Washington native can pound the bottom of the zone with his heavy fastball or late-breaking, low-80s slider, which projects as an above-average pitch. He can disrupt hitters' timing with his low-80s changeup an fringy curveball. McAfee received a medical redshirt as a junior and is committed to pitch at Duke next year, should he choose not to pursue pro ball this year.
