Lantrip's approach shouldn't work as well as it does. The Cougars' ace simply throws strike after strike, counting on his plus control of his 87-89 mph fringe-average fastball, fringe-average slider and below-average changeup to avoid the meat of the bat. It worked this year as Lantrip went 6-6, 2.60, striking out 84 and walking five in 90 innings. Lantrip doesn't really have an average pitch, but his plus control gives him a chance to eat innings in pro ball.
