View Draft Report
Gabe Gonzalez has been on scouts' radars for quite some time. He was a 13th round pick of the Rangers out of Arbor View High (Las Vegas) in 2014, but chose not to sign and instead enrolled at the College of Southern Nevada. In 2015, Gonzalez struggled to harness is excellent raw stuff, posting a 4.45 ERA. Still, he was drafted by the Phillies in the 36th round. Gonzalez is draft-eligible for the third consecutive year in 2016. He has a lightning-quick arm, giving him the ability to reach the mid-90s with his fastball, though he's better when he's controlling the pitch at 91-94. He also throws a slider and a changeup. Gonzalez performed better as a junior, pitching to a 3.77 ERA, but he walked nearly six batters per nine. He'll have to improve his control to maximize his arm strength.

A UNLV signee, Gonzalez has good size and arm strength that made him the top high school prospect in a down year for Nevada preps. Gonzalez has an inconsistent track record and is an emotional pitcher, at times bumping 94 mph with sink but often pitching around 90. His longish arm action plays into his inconsistency. He's got some projection remaining at 6-foot-3, 205 pounds, and needs to improve his secondary stuff, but both have flashed average. He's shown some feel for a changeup and at times shows the ability to spin a power breaking ball. At his best, Gonzalez shows three average pitches, so if he's signable, he could go out as high as the fifth round.
