Drafted in the 5th round (156th overall) by the Texas Rangers in 2014 (signed for $125,000).
View Draft Report
A rotation stalwart since the day he stepped on campus in Lawrence, Benjamin was moving up draft boards as a potential fifth-to-seventh rounder before coming down with an elbow injury in March and was diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament. He had Tommy John surgery in late March but still could be drafted in that round range. When healthy, Benjamin showed an 89-92 mph fastball with natural life that helped him keep the ball in the ballpark. He throws too many strikes and has just fringe-average secondary stuff in his slider and changeup, lacking a put-away pitch that would move him up boards even more.
