Track Record: Calaz signed with the Rockies for $1.7 million as a 17-year-old in January 2023. He was considered one of the top hitters available in the Dominican Republic in his international signing class. Calaz was noted for his physicality and combination of impact and plate skills. He debuted in the Dominican Summer League and hit .325/.423/.561 with seven home runs, ranking ninth in the league in slugging percentage. Calaz stood as one of the DSL’s finest prospects in 2023 and is likely to make his stateside debut in June 2024 in the Arizona Complex League.
Scouting Report: Calaz is a physical player with size and strength, but plenty of present athleticism for his size. He is still learning his body, but the Rockies are encouraged by his progress in the weight room. Calaz showed above-average bat-to-ball skills and average swing decisions during his pro debut. He rarely missed in-zone and ran an 83% zone contact rate. He has no split issues and destroyed lefthanders with a 1.262 OPS in a small sample. Calaz shows a knack for finding the barrel with the ability to backspin balls over the field. He shows plus-plus raw power with room for more, with plus game power. Calaz had some of the best top-end exit velocity data among teenagers in the minor leagues, with a 90th percentile exit velocity of a 107.2 mph and a max of 113.8. Calaz is an fringe-average runner who can get moving underway. He saw a majority of his time in center field but is expected to move to a corner, where his average arm should play.
The Future: Calaz is a classic corner outfield masher who showed big exit velocity with solid skills to match.
Scouting Grades Hit: 50 | Power: 60 | Run: 45 | Field: 50 | Arm: 50 -
BA Grade/Risk: 45/Extreme
Track Record: Calaz has some similarities to Alexander Ramirez, the center fielder who signed with the Mets out of the Dominican Republic for $2.05 million, with Calaz receiving a similar bonus.
Scouting Report: Like Ramirez, Calaz has a long, lean frame with significant physical upside and projection remaining. He's a plus runner who should start in center field and could stick there if he retains enough of his speed. Calaz drew a split camp on his pure hitting ability, with some saying they saw good contact skills, while others had concerns about longer levers leading to length in his swing, but his size and strength projection point to big power potential.
The Future: Calaz should make his pro debut in the Dominican Summer League.
Scouting Grades: Hit: 40. Power: 55. Speed: 60. Field: 50. Arm: 50
