Luke Williams, a Cal Poly recruit, had some late helium thanks to his speed, which rates at least plus with some reports of 6.5-second 60-yard times. He's athletic and has played several positions--in just the last two seasons, he's played catcher as a junior for his Dana Hills (Calif.) High team, then center fielder for a travel team, and then shortstop this spring for Dana Hills. He's expected to go out as an infielder if he plays pro ball but could use his speed to play center field. He set Dana Hill's single-season and career stolen-base record, but some scouts thought his bat was light.

Track Record: Williams had a storybook 2021 season, going from a non-prospect to helping Team USA qualify for the Summer Olympics, posting eight hits in 18 at-bats. After returning from representing Team USA, Williams quickly earned a promotion to the major leagues and hit a walk-off home run in his first big league start. He stayed in the big leagues for the majority of the season, hitting .245 in 98 at-bats.
Scouting Report: Williams isn’t going to wow anyone with his tools, but he stands out thanks to his defensive versatility, having played every position but catcher during his time in the big leagues. Williams improved his hit tool coming into the season and showed a high barrel frequency, albeit with little power. He’s a line-drive hitter with a patient approach, but his lack of power likely prevents him from being more than a quality reserve. Williams is a plus runner and a good defender with a solid arm, making just two errors in 209.2 innings spread across seven positions.
The Future: Williams’ positional flexibility should help him earn a spot in the big leagues again in 2022.

Williams worked hard to improve his hit tool and had a storybook run with Team USA to help the team qualify for the Olympics before cruising through Triple-A en route to the majors in June. Williams provided defensive versatility both in the infield and outfield, with plus speed and solid contact ability, albeit with little power.
