Smithwick was arguably the Rebels’ best hitter during the fall, but that success has not translated to the spring. He is off to a slow start and has struggled to make contact against secondary pitches. However, he has deployed a fairly sound approach and does not get too jumpy outside the strike zone. Smithwick’s calling card is his defensive ability. He moves well laterally, consistently corrals balls in the dirt, and has a strong, accurate throwing arm. Smithwick has a quick transfer and his throws carry through the base. The lack of production with the bat to this point is not overly concerning, but it certainly is something to monitor going forward. -

On the younger end for the 2023 prep class, Smithwick doesn’t turn 18 until the beginning of June and offers a solid combination of defensive acumen and offensive approach as a lefthanded hitter. Listed at 6-foot, 180 pounds, Smithwick has a smooth, calm stroke from the left side with good balance and a bat path that’s mostly geared for contact and line drives but that can occasionally get steeper when he’s trying to pull the ball for impact. Smithwick stands out for his mature approach. He has solid pitch recognition skills and has shown the ability to hit all pitch types and use the entire field, though his pure bat-to-ball skills are likely below-average. He also doesn’t have the sort of power to suggest he’ll be a big home run threat, so he’ll either be an on-base-oriented offensive player or need to add more strength or contact ability. Smithwick presents a good low target as a catcher, and moves well with loose, agile movements behind the dish, on top of solid catch-and-throw skills. He has an above-average arm and gets rid of the ball quickly, with the tools and movements to be a solid-average or better defender. He’s a well below-average runner, which is fine for a catcher. Smithwick is committed to Mississippi and is viewed as a 3-5 round talent, though he’s viewed as a tough sign.
