Gongora ranked as the No. 285 prospect in the 2023 class when he was named the Horizon League pitcher of the year for Wright State. He went undrafted and transferred to Louisville for the 2024 season where he has added more mass to his frame that’s translated to a harder fastball. After sitting in the 89-92 mph range in 2023, Gongora was more in the 92-93 mph range on average and touching 97 through his first five starts of the 2024 season. The added velocity has come with a bit more stiffness in his delivery and a lower arm slot, but his solid control has remained. He has added a new slider in the low 80s and is throwing his formerly mid-70s curveball a bit harder and more consistently in the upper 70s. He’ll occasionally mix in a mid-80s changeup to righties though all of his secondaries are fringy sort of pitches.

Gongora had a strong season with Wright State in 2023. He posted a 3.17 ERA over 16 starts and 93.2 innings, with a 22.4% strikeout rate and 8.3% walk rate. A 6-foot-5, 215-pound lefthander, Gongora has plenty of room to fill out and was named the Horizon League pitcher of the year for his performance. He throws from almost straight over the top, and his slot allows him to generate nice backspin on his fastball, a pitch that sat in the 89-91 mph range but has been up to 94. While Gongora does have a high release point, he also generates a ton of vertical break with the fastball—nearly 20 inches this spring. He also throws a mid-80s changeup with arm-side fade and a mid-70s curveball with 1-to-7 shape and gradual downward depth. While his fastball plays better than his velocity indicates, Gongora will need to refine his secondaries to succeed in a starting role in pro ball.
